The main aim of WICRA is to encourage the engagement of other groups, such as other local NGOs or CBOs, fishing cooperatives, tourism companies, scientists or individuals who want to help protect and restore the spectacular coral reefs of the Caribbean Windward Islands.
Our objectives are:
Joining WICRA carries no direct monetary cost as membership is free and voluntary. The main ask is to promote and comply with a Code of Practice that is designed to protect coral reefs and reduce harmful impacts of human activities.
Code of Practice
1. Promote awareness about coral reefs and the importance of conservation and restoration efforts among your staff, customers and community
2. Learn and respect the rules of Marine Protected Areas
3. Do not walk or anchor on reefs, and never fish for parrotfish whether inside or outside of an officially designated marine conservation area.
4. Do not discard plastic or any other trash or objects on reefs or in coastal areas, including beaches and mangroves
5. If you are on a boat, do not empty holding tanks or discharge wastewater near coral reefs and not within one nautical mile of the coastline
6. Visit restoration sites and support local organisations engaged in coral restoration work
7. Help educate others by spreading and displaying literature and materials promoting sensible actions and marine environmental stewardship WICRA aims to do three things:
